|
|
| From the 1:st of January 2007 the Swedish government will double the tax on tobacco. This will result in that the snus within EU will raise a lot. A can of loose snus will be about 7-10 SEK more expensive, about 0.6-1.1 EUR, 0.8-1.3 USD. For a portion packed can the raise will be about the half. A roll of General loose for today about 260 SEK (28 EUR, 35 USD) will after the New Year cost up to 360 SEK (38 EUR, 48 USD). |

| This is mentioned in the budget bill for 2007 and unfortunately it is only in Swedish at this time. You can read more about the bugdet bill on the Swedish governments page http://www.sweden.gov.se/sb/d/7154 . This is a proposal so no formal decision has been made yet. |

Hmmm, that's quite a large increase. Does it say why they are increasing the tax by so much? _________________ Snus of choice: CatchDry Eucalyptus

The main reason is that the Tax on tobacco has not been changed since the 1:st of August 1997. Also they are saying that it is important for the Swedish people’s health that the tax is not to low. (from the Budget Bill)
...or could it be that the government only want to make more money? |

I wonder why other countries don't produce snus. The roots are obviously Swedish, but I wonder if we'd get a more competitive/cheaper market if snus was also produced elsewhere. _________________ Snus of choice: CatchDry Eucalyptus

I think it's pretty stupid to raise taxes on snus.
Other tobacco like cigarettes and such I can understand bacause of health concerns but it's been proven every time that snus isn't nearly as bad to health as other types.
Besides, AFAIK snus is by law classified as a "foodstuff" in Sweden, NOT a tobacco product as such, even though that is its main ingredient.
Just moronic. |

if it is like it is here in the states, state and local government grow dependant on tax from cigarette sales. as the amount of smokers go down so does the amount of money they get and reallocate. I agree that it is bullshit and that folks who shouldn;t be are getting the proverbial shaft. _________________ http://stillstream.com |

| Looks like Sweden has discovered America's favorite form of taxation, the SIN tax. If it is enjoyable, tax it to high heaven, tobacco, beer, liquor, ammunition, condoms, hookers, Velcro-midget-tossing, you know all the fun stuff. |
